Jennison-Obenshain, Janna
Mesa, AZ 85203
I am a 2007 University of Evansville, Indiana graduate. My major was in music therapy, with my major instrument as piano and minor as voice. I moved to Phoenix for my music therapy internship and became board-certified in 2008. For two years, I worked full-time as a music therapist with children and adolescents who had developmental disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism, and Down's syndrome, among others. During this time I also taught piano and voice lessons as part of therapy sessions to higher-functioning clients.
I have been the children's choir director and pianist at Lehi Presbyterian Church in Mesa since March 2010. I left my job as a music therapist in September 2010 due to state budget cuts, and decided to focus on creating my own music studio full-time. I have been the keyboardist and singer in rock bands since I was 15, and my current group is called Jellied Brainz. I am also a member of Arizona Music Project, where I receive vocal coaching, can record new music, and can be scheduled to sing at weddings, anniversaries, and other events around the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
I currently teach out of my home in Mesa, but I am also willing to drive to your home, church, or school as long as it is within a 15-mile radius of me. I provide in-studio lessons Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and I'm available to drive to students on Wednesday and Friday. As I write this, I have six wonderful students, and I am looking to increase my studio to at least twenty! It is my hope that this website will help students find me, and help me get more integrated in the music education community. I look forward to making music with you!

It is a privilege to be able to present my background, philosophies, and procedures to you. I hope that you’ll find this information helpful as you make your decision to join the studio. First and foremost is the learning partnership created between the student and teacher, supported by the family at home. Together we will set musical goals for the year and develop a plan to reach those goals. As we work together at the piano to discover the beauty and power of music, we’ll be learning how to practice and develop the skills needed for musical success. It is this discipline over time that will give you results that you hope for!
Students are scheduled for individual weekly lessons (length generally determined by advancement) during the school year. Performance and evaluation opportunities are selected together at the beginning of the academic year. Some of the programs involve only the studio, while others are local or state-wide events. During the summer months, a variety of programs are offered from which you may select. It’s a good idea to keep some music going over the long summer break. . .it’s fun, it’s indoors (great for AZ heat) and it keeps your skills up! Adult students are given special consideration within the studio, working with Sherry to set and meet personal musical goals at the piano. Flexible scheduling is available to suit various schedules.

Asher, Ruthie
Cave Creek, AZ 85331
I have over 21 years experience in music education, concentrating on keyboard skills, mastery of scales, duet playing, fundamentals of music theory and aural testing. My students range from pre-schoolers to adults. There are no two students alike, so recognizing that fact and not making the process into a race, I hope to develop an appreciation and a lifelong love of music. I hold annual recitals in my home for students and parents, which is always a delightful event.
I am classically trained (to the standards set by the Royal Schools of Music, London, UK) and encourage students to explore classical, jazz and popular genres. Exposing students to a world of music is my passion and joy.

Experience: Twenty-five years experience teaching public school music and private piano at home studios in Florida, Maryland, Virginia and Arizona.
Education: Music Education degree, Indiana University of PA; Master of Education degree, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA.
My major emphasis for the past twenty-five years has been teaching private piano, although my teaching experience includes classroom and instrumental music, directing choirs and bands. Students who need to have their playing skills corrected will have special attention. What many others view as problems, I see only challenges to be overcome and developed.
Students in my studio enjoy their lesson time at a completely restored and refurbished antique (built in 1903) Knabe parlor grand piano. A new Roland spinet offers each student opportunity to explore and/or play supplemental music with recorded orchestral music. Rhythm is enhanced by playing this way. A computer loaded with learning games helps the beginner with note learning, rhythm and musical terms.
A COMPLETE MUSIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE is possible at Mountainview Music Studio with an experienced teacher who loves her job of teaching. Students become lifelong musicians as STARS in this studio, respected and taught well!

I work in a small studio in East Mesa where we teach different instruments and ensembles. I attended Richard Strauss Konservatorium in Munich, Germany with emphasis on Church Music. My primary instruments were organ and piano with a strong secondary emphasis on choral conducting, voice and ensemble. I retired from 30 years in church music filling different positions in Germany, Michigan and mostly here in the East Valley. I have my own business now but enjoy teaching too much on order to give it up entirely. I like to instill in my students a love for music and the instrument they chose. A lot can be accomplished with dilligent practice and exercise and I am a relentless pursuer of perfection in a talented student. Chesley, Angie
Mesa, AZ 85206
My name is Angie Chesley and I have been teaching piano and voice for the past 14 years, both at The Music Store and in my private home studio.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages and love to watch them succeed. My philosophy is that music should be enjoyable as well as educational. I focus on the technical aspects of learning music, but I feel that it is very important that the student enjoy the music that they are creating.
My love of music and the arts began very early in my life as I watched my Father play the piano and sing professionally with various bands. When I was older I performed regularly with my Father in Nashville, TN near the Grand Old Opry at Shoney’s Inn and other venues. I grew up taking weekly piano lessons from my Grandmother who was a music teacher in demand, and dancing with the dance company where my Mother was a dance teacher.
In High School I performed with the top choirs and was one of the accompanists for the choirs. I attended BYU-Idaho where I was a music major and accompanied singers as well as sang in the choirs. I have also been in many Broadway productions as a soloist, in the chorus, and in the dance team.
I have been singing professionally with the band “The Swingtips” for many years and have sung on many of their CD’s. I am also a veteran in the recording studio and have done many professional recordings as a singer.
In recent years I have developed a love for jazz piano and have studied for the past 6 years with Steve Culp who is a professional jazz pianist and is a member of the band “Turning Point”, and with Barb Catlin who is also a professional jazz pianist and is the head of the Jazz Department as Mesa Community College. I have had the opportunity to perform professionally with the MCC jazz combo at the Tempe Arts Festival and look forward to many more performing opportunities.
I am currently finishing my music education degree with Ottawa University and plan to continue with my masters.
I am the mother of 2 wonderful boys ages 12 and 5 and love to share my love of the arts with my boys.

Music has been a defining influence in my life, and I hope to bring the joy of music to my students. I strongly believe that being a well rounded musician is important, and in addition to typical piano instruction, I also include composition, improvisation, music history, extensive music theory, and performance opportunities. I take a multi sensory approach and students hear, feel, play, and say/sing the music in the lessons. I am in my last year of my Bachelor of the Arts in Music Therapy at ASU as a vocal major and have been working with children for the past four years as a habilitator, camp counselor, and piano teacher. I am a member of MTNA and Desert Valley Music Teacher's Association.

Smith, Laura
Mesa, AZ 85207
I am 20 years old and I have been teaching piano for 5 rewarding years here in Mesa, AZ. Before starting my piano lessons I worked under my previous piano instructor who gave me pedagogy lessons. I have worked with a wide variety of beginning and intermediate students. Teaching someone who has never played the piano before is incredibly exciting for me because I get to introduce them to the wonderful world of the piano. At the same time, I thoroughly enjoy receiving students who have met that world and seek to learn more. Along with teaching technique and composition skills, I focus strongly on theory. I went through the Arizona theory program which has greatly benifited me. I am a member of the Desert Valley Music Teachers Association so my students have an oppurtunity to play in plenty of events if interested. I believe in giving everyone a chance to open their minds to the blessings that music can bring.

Westlake, Tiffany
Mesa, AZ 85206
I teach students (any and all ages) music in a way that reaches them and instills a lifelong love of music. I adapt lessons to the student's individual needs and learning styles. Working with the student, I help them understand where we’re going in lessons and why we’re covering the things we’re covering. I help my students set goals, explaining what the goals will do for their overall playing. While I will not deny that to learn music takes discipline and commitment, I believe music needs to be fun; so I have prizes, rewards, and incentives for achievement (long-term and short-term) to motivate, inspire, and nurture my students. I also give lots of varied performance opportunities throughout the year to spice things up and remind them why they want to learn music. I also help students prepare to play at church functions, Regional and All-state auditions, Metropolitan Youth Symphony, East Valley Youth Symphony, Phoenix Youth Guild, Mesa Youth Orchestra, Mesa Young People's Orchestra, school orchestras, school choirs, school bands, and school jazz bands, etc. (All these activities promote learning in my studio.)

I teach on a Schimmel Grand Piano, which my students really enjoy. Give me a try, and you won't be disappointed. Call for references and fees.

Edwards, Linda
Scottsdale, AZ 85260
My primary purpose in teaching piano is to serve those who desire to build on their musical talents or to tap into that undiscovered gift of music. I welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and provide you with the necessary skills to make music at the piano a rewarding experience for yourself and for others. As a teacher, I strive to work with each student's musical interests while also introducing other repertoire to enhance a full range of music appreciation. I believe introducing music early on in a child's life contributes to the fundamentals of learning. When the gift of music is then shared, it becomes a stepping-stone to making a difference, not only for oneself, but for others around you. I am a member of the Phoenix Music Teachers Association and Arizona State Music Teachers' Association. I encourage any student to enhance their playing performance by participating in the annual PMTA piano ensemble and two recitals a year. Most of our recitals are held at senior centers where each student is able to give back to their community in sharing their abilities. I have personally played piano for over 40 years. I prefer to teach in my own studio, however, will consider travelling to student's homes. I attended Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, Arizona, where I studied piano. I have served as a choir accompanist and church organist. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and contributing to the musical growth in my individual students. I look forward to meeting you and your student.

Bio: William Gerdes, founder and director of Scottsdale Piano Studio is an accomplished musician with 10 years teaching experience.
Some of William’s performance experience includes weddings, social events, churches and recitals. Over the past 25 years he has been a member of several bands and jazz and chorus ensembles.
William believes a good teacher must be able to teach his students two fundamental things: 1) To play with artistry to fully utilize the expressiveness and beauty of the instrument and 2) To play with relaxed efficient technique to avoid strain and injury. According to Chopin, artistry and technique were inseparable.
In order to advance steadily and consistently on the instrument one must practice with purposefulness, focus and efficiency. William teaches each of his students what this means and writes a clear, concise lesson plan that covers the fundamental components of the language of music: How to speak, read and write it.
William has long been involved in composition, songwriting and recording. Much of his work is done in his own recording studio. He has entered his compositions in several songwriting competitions including Billboard Music’s songwriting competition. His current project in the works is the completion of his own music CD.
William works as a freelance writer, arranger and recording engineer helping others produce various projects such as demos and backing tracks for auditions and performances. Being a capable musician and recording engineer, he is well versed in both the artistic and technological sides of music.
In addition to running a thriving piano and recording studio, William leads a fulfilling life as a husband, father, teacher and musician.

Studer, Cheryl
Phoenix, AZ 85020
The music lessons students receive are based on years of experience in helping all ages learn music by highly effective, motivating and enjoyable methods. Piano lessons from Cheryl Studer will include:

2. Reading notes on a staff by recognizing intervals: seconds, thirds, fourths, which enable students to easily develop the ability to transpose to all keys.
3. Singing to learn intervals by associating each interval with a song.
4. Improvising simple pieces by using imagination: place yourself in a forest with birds in the trees.
5. Accompanying other singers or instrumentalists, in order to enjoy music with family and friends.
6. Hearing and recognizing intervals, major and minor, crescendo or diminuendo, and rhythmic patterns.

Newman, Ursula
Scottsdale, AZ 85259
Ursula is formally the owner and director of the Ursula Cauffiel School of Music in Toledo, Ohio. She has taught hundreds of students from age 3 through seniors to play piano whether it be for their own fun and enjoyment or for a career in music. Students will be able to play songs within their first lesson. With Ursula's positive and caring approach to teaching students of all ages and abilities, students will be able to master many aspects of music. Students will be able to read notes, play tunes by ear, improvise, understand and write musical theory concepts and perform music whether it be popular or advanced classical. It is very important when seeking a teacher that the instructor is skilled in teaching. If a student is not taught correctly or efficiently how to play, habits can develop without the students knowledge. This can inhibit the student's ability to master the instrument. Kindness and patience from the teacher are paramount for the student's success. If a teacher is rude or impatient, often the student equates the behavior in thinking music is not for them. Learning to play piano is for you! Ursula will help you achieve your dreams.
Dolivier, Marenann
Gilbert, AZ 85296
I love teaching children and adults. I've taught for about 40 years. My degree is in elementary education with a minor in music. For eight years I enrolled in one or two-week Summer Piano Pedagogy Courses at various colleges and universities, such as Baldwin Wallace College & Capitol University in Ohio & North Western University in Illinois. I have also taken shorter 1 to 3-day workshops and Master Classes with such wonderful teachers as Amanda Vick Lethco, Dennis Alexander, Jean Weisman and Nancy Bachus. I am a certified teacher of Kindermusik and the Mayron Cole Group Piano Method. I have focused heavily on beginning instruction because I believe a firm foundation is fundamental to future success.
I served several years as the Akron, Ohio Chairman for the National Guild of Piano Teachers. All of my students entered annually. The Guild frowns upon publishing student ratings so I will only say I was pleased with all of my students. I also served as a judge for the National Federation of Piano Teachers. Most of my performance experience is as an accompanist for soloists and small professional vocal or instrumental groups.
When we moved to Gilbert in 1996, I became an active member of Desert Valley Music Teachers Association. All of my students participated in a minimum of two annual events, most entered 3 or more and several entered all the events. Over the past 8 years it has become difficult for me to manage being out and about without assistance with things that aren't convenient for me to manage alone. I miss my association with the many wonderful teachers I met at DVMTA.
I emphasize theory, ear training, sight-reading, transposing using movable "do", some composition and improvising, technique, playing musically with feeling, ensemble playing and performance etiquette and confidence. I teach students how to practice effectively. I have one formal recital a year along with student recitals and other performance opportunities.
Though I've been semi-retired, today's economy has me building my studio again. I have a few openings after school and in the mornings before school. Daytime lessons are available for Adults and Home School Students. I do not teach in the evenings. All lessons are in my Gilbert home.

EDUCATION
I received my master's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986 and my bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983.
EXPERIENCE - TEACHING
My first experience in teaching piano students began in 1983, and I have consistently taught since then. I was fortunate to be awarded a teaching assistantship in group piano during my study at the University of Illinois. In addition to teaching group piano to college music majors, part of the teaching assistantship involved giving private lessons to children and adults. Dr. James Lyke, who has written many books on teaching piano, was the professor who directed my teaching.
After receiving my master's degree, I returned to Madison. For the next six years I taught piano students in addition to maintaining a full-time office job. Early in 1993 I began teaching piano full-time. My lessons generally include the use of a method book, technic book and theory book. Students also work on piano solos in various styles, from classical to jazz and pop.
EXPERIENCE - PLAYING
I maintained my own level of playing by accompanying for University of Wisconsin-Madison music students. I played for violin, viola and cello students as well as clarinet and flute students and performed in numerous recitals. Teachers of some of these UW-Madison students include Vartan Manoogian, David Perry, Sally Chisholm, Tyrone Greive, Parry Karp, Uri Vardi, Linda Bartley and Stephanie Jutt.

Cotter, Sara
Queen Creek, AZ 85240
I am an advanced pianist and have been a professional accompanist.
I have ten years experience teaching piano. I take all levels, beginning, intermediate and advanced. My studio currently has about twenty students and I’m looking to expand to around thirty. I have all ages from four years to adult. My goal for each of my students is to prepare them to be able to audition and gain entrance into a university piano program and major in music if they so desire. I studied music on scholarship at Northern Arizona University for three years and double majored in music education and performance. While there I made extra money accompanying the other music students for their recitals. Before I finished my degree I got married, switched schools, and ended up getting my degree in Early Childhood Education.
I have an excellent program that has proven very successful. I combine a traditional piano method with Suzuki. The focus is on being a well rounded practical pianist. In other words they should be able to read notes and sight read well. In addition to that we also work on ear training.
I have two recitals a year. The students pick out their own songs for these recitals. They love getting to learn this ‘fun’ song and helps to motivate them to practice.

Hiatt, Carol
"I started teaching piano when I was 19 yers old. I began learning the piano at age 8 yrs old. I was an extemely quick learner and a great pianst, and applied myself to mastering it. The many things I've learned have qualified me to expertly teach. I took lessons until I was 19 years old and have kept advancing throughout my life, sometimes taking more lessons. I've played in many recitals and performed numerous times throughout my life. I used to play the accordian and even performed with the noted Milano's family of accordians in Mesa. I'm very practical in my teaching, and am especially good with children from young children to adults. I create a desire in my students to achieve and progress. Children and adults are drawn to me because of my personality. I make piano fun and the children really like taking lessons from me! I am very zealous towards the piano and the learning of it, because it has enriched my own life so much in so many ways. I teach some pop music (enough to keep the kids interested and for variety's sake) but I like classical because of what it teaches the student. I love piano and my enthusiasm and happiness towards the instrument creates a perfect learning situation. My home is a peaceful environment and a perfect learning situation. I also take the students through music theory covering many things such as scales, inversions, and chords etc. I teach one on one and find that to be the most effective way of teaching. I have been a sponsor of many musical recitals featuring some renowned piansts. If you give me the honor of teaching your child, I promise I will create a wonderful love of music in him or her!"

Hemsath, Whitney
I have been playing the piano for over 20 years. I love music, and one of my primary goals is to get my students as excited about the power of music as I am. I write my own songs, love classical music, but also work a lot on ear training for those who want to play what they hear on the radio. I passed the AP Music theory test back in high school and since then theory has been a huge part of my life and I encourage my students to always keep their theory understanding at least equal to their playing ability. I have semi-annual recitals for my 10+ students, and am new to the Queen Creek area and am looking to grow my studio even more.

Hello! My name is Nicci (pronounced Nicky). I am excited to be able to give back part of the wonderful gift I have been given. I teach from my home which is conveniently located near Country Club & University in Mesa. I have lived most of my life in Mesa, Arizona and I love it here. I have been married for 5 years to the love of my life. We have 3 beautiful children. Music has always been an important part of my life. There are two women who have greatly influenced my love for music, and the development of my musical talents. The first is my grandmother. She gave me my first piano lesson when I was 5 years old and I was so excited! The second is the piano teacher that taught me through most of my youth. She always encouraged me to teach, and thanks to her inspiration, example and guidance I have finally taken the plunge! Although I have never played at Carnegie Hall, I have had the privilege to play for most of my adult life in various callings at church and as an accompanist for vocal and instrumental soloists and choirs. I am so grateful for the talent that I have been given, and would love to help you discover yours!
In addition to private piano instruction, I also teach Let's Play Music! classes to children ages 4-6. Let's Play Music! is a music theory course that emphasizes total musicianship through piano playing, singing, classical music, note reading and ear training... and it's accomplished through PLAY! This really is the most fantastic program I have found to teach music to young children. Class size is 5-8 students and classes run through the school year. For additional information please visit www.letsplaymusicsite.com. Contact me today to register for the music foundation of a lifetime!
I understand that times are tough, and don't want money to prevent you or your child from discovering and developing your talents. My lesson rates are very affordable, and I am willing to consider trades in lieu of payment for lessons, so please, don't hesitate to contact me!
